Brand Activation Examples

Brand activation examples: creating an immersive experience for visitors at your trade show booth

At a trade show, you can see the difference right away. One booth mainly displays products, while at another, visitors are actively doing, feeling, or trying something themselves. We call the latter “brand activation,” and it often leaves a much more lasting impression than a brochure or a conversation at the counter.

On this page, you’ll learn what makes brand activation on the trade show floor successful, what forms it can take, and how to choose the right one. Then we’ll show you examples from our own projects.

What makes a brand activation at a trade show successful?

Four factors determine whether a brand activation at a trade show is successful.

  • A clear goal. Do you want leads, brand awareness, or do you want people to experience a product? An activation without a goal may produce nice photos, but it won’t deliver results.
  • A connection to your brand story. The activation must convey something that truly aligns with your brand. A game that merely draws a crowd says nothing about who you are.
  • A low barrier to entry. In a crowded hall, a visitor has just a few seconds. They need to immediately understand what they can do, without an explanation and without a long line.
  • A follow-up. An activation brings visitors to your booth, but it’s the conversation that follows that generates leads. Make sure your booth staff knows how to turn an activation into an appointment.

Types of Brand Activation on the Trade Show Floor

An activation doesn’t have to be big or expensive, but it does need to fit your goal and your space. These are the types we see most often at trade shows.

  • Experience Room. A designated area within the booth where visitors experience the brand story through light, sound, and visuals. You can read more about this approach in “From Trade Show Booth to Brand Experience.”
  • Interactive installation or game. A screen, touch table, or game that allows visitors to get hands-on. Useful if you want to make a technical or abstract product more tangible.
  • Product demonstration or test station. Visitors try out the product themselves instead of just looking at it.
  • Live activity. A workshop, a barista, a speed artist, or a performance: something that draws visitors from the aisle to your booth and keeps them engaged.
  • Photo or content opportunity. A spot where visitors can take and share a photo or video. This helps your brand reach an even wider audience even after the trade show is over.

How to Choose the Right Promotion for Your Trade Show Booth

Not sure which option is right for you? Start by asking yourself these five questions.

  1. Who do you want to reach? Decision-makers who come specifically to ask questions require a different approach than a general audience that just happens to walk by.
  2. What should a visitor know or do after the experience? This helps you determine whether the activation should primarily inform, persuade, or generate an appointment.
  3. How much space do you have? The number of square meters determines whether an immersive experience is feasible, or if a compact setup would work better.
  4. Who will be manning the booth? An activation that requires a lot of explanation will only work if your team has time for it.
  5. How will you measure the results? Consider the number of participants, conversations, and leads, and agree on these metrics in advance.

Examples of brand activation at trade shows

Below are four examples from our own projects, ranging from an F1 car on display to a smoke-filled unveiling.

Mastercard: An F1 Car as an Eye-Catcher at Money20/20

Anyone who walked into the Mastercard booth immediately saw a replica of an F1 car. In this way, Mastercard demonstrated—without needing to explain—how the brand is involved with Formula 1 worldwide. A recognizable object makes it clear at a glance what a brand stands for.

Type of activation: an eye-catcher that tells the brand story.

Gamma at the VT Wonen trade show: mix your own color

Visitors had their favorite color scanned at the Gamma booth and then mixed their own paint samples at a mixing station. This allowed them to get to know the brand through hands-on activity, rather than just by looking at colors.

Type of activity: interactive installation.

Quooker at EuroCucina: try out the taps yourself

At Quooker, visitors could test the taps themselves and also enjoy live cooking. Anyone who operates the tap themselves experiences firsthand what the product does.

Type of promotion: product demonstration and tasting station.

Spirotech at VSK: A Smoke-Filled Unveiling

The centerpiece of Spirotech’s booth was a presentation column, specially built for the unveiling of a new product. Dynamic images played on an integrated LED screen, followed by a countdown. During the countdown, the glass, square block inside the column slowly filled with smoke. At zero, the smoke cleared, revealing the new product. Technology, experience, and storytelling came together in a single moment that captured the attention of the entire exhibition floor.

Type of event: live event centered around a product launch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brand Activation at Trade Shows

How much does a brand activation at a trade show cost?

That varies depending on the concept, technology, and scale, so there’s no set price. You can find out what to expect for the booth itself in the article “How Much Does a Trade Show Booth Cost?”

How do you measure the success of a brand activation at a trade show?

Look at the number of participants, the number of conversations, and the number of leads generated. Agree in advance on the results you want to achieve, so you can compare them afterward.

Does every trade show booth need brand activation?

No. For some trade shows and products, a clean, uncluttered booth is enough. An activation is especially worthwhile if there’s actually something to experience and your team has the time for it.

When should you start planning a brand activation?

Ideally, right from the stand’s design phase. Concept, engineering, and construction take time, and an activation that you come up with after the fact rarely fits well into the space.
