A Cardboard Trade Show Booth for Acquia

A cardboard trade show booth that gives back: that’s what we’re setting up at DrupalCon together with Acquia. The booth itself featured a handwritten note that read: “We spent less on this booth so we could give $50,000 to Drupal.” In this blog post, you’ll learn why we chose cardboard, what we made out of it, and what that means for your next trade show booth.

What if a trade show booth could give something back?

A trade show booth usually stays up for a few days and then disappears from the scene for a while—sometimes forever. Acquia wanted to take a different approach at DrupalCon. Acquia wanted to give something back to Drupal, and that gesture started with the booth itself: almost everything was made of cardboard. Handwritten on the booth itself were the words: “We spent less on this booth so we could give $50,000 to Drupal.” A booth that not only talks about giving back, but actually does it.

Why did we build a cardboard trade show booth for Acquia?

The idea stemmed from Acquia’s desire to give back to Drupal. That’s why a standard booth didn’t fit the narrative. The concept revolves around three ideas: collaboration, giving back, and sustainability. Cardboard is a simple material that fits the message, and with clever design, it looks surprisingly sturdy.

What kinds of things are made of cardboard?

Almost every part of the booth is made of cardboard:

  • Acquia’s 3D logo, made of cardboard letters.
  • The handwritten message about the $50,000 donation.
  • A large, three-dimensional drop made of layered cardboard.
  • The furniture: standing tables and stools, made from cardboard cylinders.
  • The product displays, such as the open cardboard boxes next to the screen.

The screen and the QR codes are the only digital components. Everything else is made of cardboard: simple materials, clever design. Each element is designed to reflect the concept of collaboration, giving back, and sustainability.

What does this mean for your next trade show booth?

A booth that looks beyond the trade show days starts with the question of what you want your booth to convey and what happens to it afterward. You can read more about our approach on the page about sustainable booth design. A cardboard booth isn’t always the solution, but it shows that a booth can be more than just a temporary backdrop: it’s a story with a sequel. Curious about what that could mean for your brand?
